Acquired brand decision guide

What to do with an acquired brand website

Do not choose between keeping, merging or redirecting an acquired brand website from the announcement, the homepage or the parent company's brand preference alone. First establish who controls the domain, what customers use it for, which pages carry distinct intent, where leads go and whether equivalent destinations exist. If required evidence is missing, INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE is a valid decision.

Check the evidence before choosing a path.

CALDRIN METHOD: Use five decision states. None is the default, and none predicts a ranking, traffic, customer or revenue outcome.

Five contingent decision states. No option is ranked, preferred or presented as an outcome prediction.
DecisionEvidence patternFirst reversible actionPause or reverse when
KEEPThe operating brand serves a distinct audience, service area or customer path, and consolidation proof is incomplete.Keep the acquired brand website live while adding ownership disclosure, access, measurement and controlled cross-links.Duplicate intent, conflicting local entities or unowned customer routing cannot be resolved.
MERGEThe operating brand is intentionally ending, and material URLs, locations, customer paths and target equivalents are mapped.Build and validate targets before changing the old site, then pilot a bounded cohort.Equivalent destinations, baselines or rollback ownership are missing.
PARTIAL_CONSOLIDATIONSome assets duplicate the parent while brand, location, service or customer assets remain distinct.Move one bounded content class and preserve unmatched assets.Canonicals, navigation, entity naming or lead routing conflict.
REDIRECTA source asset is intentionally retired and a direct intent-equivalent destination is verified.Test a small, version-controlled, one-hop cohort with a rollback file.Destination relevance, customer routing or the target's technical state fails.
INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCEA hard-gate field is unresolved.Freeze irreversible changes, then assign the missing evidence and its owner. The missing field is resolved and the decision is reviewed again.

Evidence required before choosing a path

An acquired brand website needs a decision record before it needs a migration plan. The table below assigns the evidence and its owner. A homepage response cannot establish how deep paths behave or whether anything transferred between domains.

Evidence before decision

This evidence table is not a score or recommendation engine. Mark every field as verified, not measured, unknown or not applicable. Any unresolved required field sends the decision to INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE.

Static evidence record. Unresolved hard-gate fields remain visible and send the decision to INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE.

The five decisions and their first reversible action

The acquired brand website should move into one of five states only after the evidence pattern matches. These are decision rules, not measured outcomes.

KEEP

KEEP can be an evidence state while consolidation proof is incomplete. It does not endorse the acquired site's search or commercial performance.

MERGE

MERGE is the operating-brand decision. Redirects, page moves and content changes sit downstream; they do not define that decision.

PARTIAL_CONSOLIDATION

PARTIAL_CONSOLIDATION needs a named asset class or cohort. An improvised mixture of page states is not a decision boundary.

REDIRECT

REDIRECT is a URL-level action. It does not decide whether the acquired brand or domain should keep operating.

INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE

INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE is an explicit Caldrin method state. It assigns each missing field to an owner before the decision is reviewed again.

Exceptions that stop the ordinary flow

An exception pauses the acquired brand website decision even when the general pattern appears clear. Keep the current customer route stable while the named owner resolves it.

CALDRIN METHOD: These are method assignments, not findings from the acquisition sample.

Caldrin method: each exception stays attached to the reason it blocks, the owner and the unresolved state.

Keep the transaction date and domain observation date separate

The acquisition event date and the date a domain was observed answer different questions. Record the event type and its source, then separately record when the domain and selected paths were checked. Mark the transition start as not established unless another source proves it.

An announcement date does not reveal when a redirect began. A current redirect does not reveal how long it has existed. Without a separately evidenced transition start, do not calculate acquisition age, migration age or time to change.

A deep-path observation records behaviour, not outcome

A dated path check tells you how a requested URL behaved at that moment. It does not establish historical indexation, destination relevance, customer continuity or migration success.

OBSERVED, bounded path:

  • Requested URL: https://www.ohiobasementsystems.com/services/basement-waterproofing/
  • Observed: 2026-08-31T19:39:53.650232+00:00
  • Final response: HTTP 403
  • Redirects: 1 hop
  • Final destination: https://www.ohiobasementauthority.com/services/basement-waterproofing/
  • Destination relevance: acquisition-domain destination observed; path relevance not verified
  • Canonical: not observed
  • Index state: not measured
  • Outcome: not measured

This records one requested path at one timestamp. It does not establish sitewide behaviour, historical indexation, destination relevance, customer continuity or migration success.

For each material path, record the requested URL, observation timestamp, response, redirect hops, final destination, destination-relevance state, canonical state and every field that was not measured. That gives reviewers a dated, source-linked path observation without turning request behaviour into an outcome claim.

Method and limitations

This guide separates current observations from the rules used to make a decision.

  • Observed: dated source, domain and selected-path states from a bounded review. Some transaction claims could not be rechecked from the saved source copies, so they are not used as decision proof.
  • Caldrin method: the five decisions, required evidence, treatment of missing information, reversible first actions and rollback design.
  • Not measured: market prevalence, platform comparisons, acquisition age, migration success, rankings, traffic, leads, revenue, local-profile continuity, local-entity retention and operator validation of the worksheet.

The search-format review used a dated Brave capture configured for the United States, English and desktop. The five-page comparison used accessible results at captured ranks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 9; ranks 2 and 8 returned HTTP 403, and rank 7 timed out. The comparison is directional, not representative. We did not capture Google result order, People Also Ask, featured snippets or AI Overviews for this review, so this guide makes no claim about their presence or absence.

This table supports a human decision. It is not an automated scoring tool, and it has not been validated through operator interviews. The page stops at evidence, exceptions and the first reversible action. It does not provide an implementation programme or promise any search or commercial result.

Record the evidence before choosing a path

Return to Evidence before decision, assign each missing field and name the person who owns it. If the decision crosses brands, domains, locations or operating teams, record it as a portfolio search-governance decision with an approver, rollback owner and stop condition.

Request the free visibility audit to measure part of the current search footprint before that review. The audit covers one domain and cannot approve a KEEP, MERGE, PARTIAL_CONSOLIDATION or REDIRECT decision.
